In June 2021, I watched my son Tom play disc golf in a tournament at Springburn and thought I could do better than him. I bought discs and a Keep basket and threw everything in an open field in Inverness. After a few months, I was joined by Roddy and we both threw lots of discs at the basket. In November 2021, someone suggested we take the basket to Torvean Park. Torvean was a disused part of a golf course which had been adapted to accommodate the Inverness park run. Roddy bought a basket and we carried the two baskets around Torvean each time we played. We then decided to leave them overnight and this attracted Tony who had been marshaling for the park run. We three then bought 3 more Keep baskets and made an 18 hole course with multiple shots to each of the 5 baskets.More players turned up and started playing and we attracted a few local legends in Trevor and Seonaidh who had played for many years before us.
We formed IDGC so that we could apply for funding as a constituted club. In the meantime we bought 3 more Keep baskets, Trevor donated two solid old baskets, Glasgow DGC donated two recycled baskets and the Daddy of Scottish discgolf, Seamus donated one basket. We bought more baskets and eventually had 18. We then agreed an 18 hole course which flowed well and we could see working in a tournament.
Meanwhile we had players attending various tournaments in the Scotland wide Quaich tour, the highlight for me was seeing 6 Inverness players competing at Loch Tay in our red team kit. After that event, the whole team were so enthused.
We completed our Lottery fund application and were fortunate to be awarded £6000. This bought 18 tournament baskets courtesy of Seamus and we had them in the ground in one weekend late in October with everyone helping out. We installed tee signs designed by Tony and continued with course maintenance.
We have held a few informal local events and have welcomed 7 players from Mull to a joint event. We are now looking forward to the new season and the Caledonian Open to be held at Torvean on 11th and 12th June 2023.
We have forged good relationships with the park run, the council, the rowing club and the local community. We have also committed to picking up litter and dog poo to keep our great park in good condition.
We have run sessions for children including the junior park runners and the Brownies. We plan to support female players with some initially less competitive events.
We now look forward to our next year of disc golf with our shared ethos: You Reap What You Throw.
